Charlize Theron Set for 'Prometheus', 'Alien' Connection is 'Definite'

A couple of news items related to Ridley Scott's Prometheus to cover today. First up, THR reports that Charlize Theron is now confirmed for a role in the sci-fi movie, putting her opposite Noomi Rapace, star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and Michael Fassbender. That leaves two other lead roles still left to be cast. In addition, despite Scott himself saying that "the keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative", Fassbender spoke with MTV about the project, and told them that "there's a definite connecting vein" to Alien. Even more quotes below!

Fassbender, who also stars in X-Men: First Class, chatted with MTV briefly about Prometheus, in which all we know is that he will play an android. Here's what he tells them (video of his answer viewable beneath):

"Oh, absolutely. There's a definite connecting vein," Fassbender told MTV News. "You realize you're part of something else, but it's definitely in keeping with the old ones."

Although it explores other areas of that universe, it appears that Prometheus and Alien exist in the same space. For Fassbender, that connection was initially a bit overwhelming: "When I read it, I was like, 'Well, okay, another Alien. Where do you go with this idea?' And then I sort of read the script, and it's new, yet it's in keeping with the old traditions as well. But there's a whole new revelation within this film."

"The first 'Alien' [movies], they were thrillers," he continued. "Something's going on. It's creeping, it's sinister. Things are happening, it's building, [and there are] different sorts of intrigues and politics going on between the different relationships on board."
