Warner Bros Picks Up a 'Big Idea' Sci-Fi Spec Script 'Expulsion'

It's a tremendous success for Warner Bros that Chris Nolan's big summer blockbuster Inception has earned a whopping $753 million worldwide to date, and that has apparently given the studio a boost in confidence and cash to invest in other big, bold, original concepts. Deadline reports that WB has picked up a spec script from author Gregg Hurwitz called Expulsion, a big budget tentpole science fiction film not based on any previous work. Here's the concept: After an act of terror destroys Earth, a small band of survivors escape to a planet beyond the solar system. Alas, that's all we know about this for now, but I like the sound of it so far.

Gregg Hurwitz has written a few comics and a few novels, including Trust No One, The Program, Minutes to Burn, The Crime Writer and They're Watching, which is currently being adapted into a movie. This isn't the only big sci-fi project that Warner Bros is in development on right now - they've also got Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity in the works, but that is still struggling to secure a lead actress and get a greenlight. As a huge fan of the science fiction genre, especially all epic space movies, I'm glad to see Warner Bros investing some of that Inception cash in original sci-fi ideas - I just hope it doesn't take 10 years to actually get these movies made!
