New Kull Movie in the Works

Paradox Entertainment's CEO Fredrik Malmberg told Fantasy.fr that a new "Kull" movie is in the works. Here is the translated article, courtesy of the site:

Paradox Entertainment is currently working on a new movie adaptation for Kull the Conqueror.

Fredrik Malmberg, Paradox Entertainment's CEO, used the occasion of an exclusive interview to reveal his company was working on a new Kull movie.

Fredrik Malmberg also told us about Conan and other ongoing adaptations. You'll hear of it soon.

Robert Ervin Howard created a hero called Kull in 1929 for the Weird Tales magazine. Howard would draw some inspiration from this character to create Conan, but he dwells in an era predating the cimmerian's one.

Native to Atlantis, Kull grows up with his family in Tiger Valley until a flood wipe his clan out. Another clan bring him up, but he stands up for a woman destined to burn alive and ends up banned from Atlantis. He sails for the continent and take up the mercenary way. He'll become king, just as Conan will do thousands of years later. Under his influence, Valusia ends up as the most powerful kingdom of the time.

As a reminder, in 1997, Kull made an appearance on screen in the less than convincing Kull the Conqueror, directed by John Nicolella and played by Kevin Sorbo.

Αυτόματους υπότιτλους αποκτούν σταδιακά τα βίντεο του YouTube

Σε μια προσπάθεια να βοηθήσει τους κωφούς χρήστες του Διαδικτύου, η Google εμπλουτίζει τα βίντεο του YouTube με υπότιτλους τους οποίους θα εισάγει αυτόματα το σύστημα παρακολουθώντας τους διαλόγους.

Σε πρώτη φάση, η νέα λειτουργία θα είναι διαθέσιμη μόνο για την αγγλική γλώσσα στα βίντεο που δημοσιεύουν 13 κανάλια του YouTube, όπως το National Geographic και ορισμένα αμερικανικά και ξένα πανεπιστήμια. Σταδιακά, οι αυτόματοι υπότιτλοι θα επεκταθούν σε όλο το περιεχόμενο της υπηρεσίας.

Η λειτουργία βασίστηκε στην τεχνολογία αναγνώρισης ομιλίας που ανέπτυξε για την υπηρεσία τηλεφωνητή Google Voice.

Επισημαίνοντας ότι περίπου 20 ώρες βίντεο ανεβαίνουν στο YouTube κάθε λεπτό, ο Κεν Χάρεστιεν, ένας κωφός προγραμματιστής της Google που ανέλαβε την ανάπτυξη της τεχνολογίας, «η πλειονότητα του online περιεχομένου βίντεο που παράγουν οι χρήστες παραμένει μη προσβάσιμο για ανθρώπους σαν εμένα».

Ο ίδιος σημείωσε ότι η λειτουργία αναγνώρισης φωνής δεν είναι τέλεια, καθώς οι επιδόσεις της επηρεάζονται από τον περιβάλλοντα θόρυβο και τις έντονες προφορές.

Σε επίδειξη που παρακολούθησε το Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο Ειδήσεων, η φράση «SIM card» (κάρτα SIM) μεταγράφηκε ως salmon (σολομός).

Οι χρήστες του YouTube έχουν από πέρυσι τη δυνατότητα να εισάγουν υπότιτλους με το χέρι, οι περισσότεροι όμως το παραλείπουν.

Εκτός από τη λειτουργία αυτόματων υπότιτλων, η Google παρουσίασε και ένα ακόμα εργαλείο που ονομάζεται «αυτόματος συγχρονισμός υπότιτλων»: οι χρήστες εισάγουν μόνο το κείμενο των διαλόγων, και το σύστημα αναλαμβάνει στη συνέχεια να τους συγχρονίσει με το βίντεο αυτόματα.

The Shield Writer to Pen Underworld 4

"The Shield" writer John Hlavin has been hired to pen Underworld 4 for Screen Gems and Lakeshore.

Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the vampire-vs.-werewolf saga, is producing with Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright of Lakeshore.

The fourth installment does not yet have a director attached and neither Kate Beckinsale or Rhona Mitra have signed to return.

Hlavin said the plot is under wraps, "but I can tell you it's not a prequel." He added, "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements."

Idris Elba to Play Heimdall in Thor

Idris Elba has joined the cast of Marvel Studios' Thor, reports Heat Vision.

Elba will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard, who stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders.

He joins a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano.

To be directed by Kenneth Branagh, the comic book adaptation will be released by Paramount Pictures on May 20, 2011. Shooting will begin mid-January in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

War of Gods Becomes Dawn of War

Production Weekly reports that director Tarsem Singh's War of Gods is now titled Dawn of War and is scheduled to start shooting in Montreal in March.

Henry Cavill ("The Tudors") is expected to play Greek warrior Theseus, who battles against long-imprisoned Titans who are hoping to use the demons to restore their power.

The project was written by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides.

ABC Announces Lost Premiere!

ABC announced today that the sixth and final season of "Lost" will kick-off with a special all-night event on Tuesday, February 2. A recap special will kick off the night from 8:00-9:00 p.m., ET, followed by the much anticipated two-hour premiere from 9:00-11:00 p.m.

The series will then air in its regular time period Tuesday nights from 9:00-10:00 p.m., ET beginning the following week, on February 9.

Brad Pitt's Plan B Developing Dark Void Video Game Movie

Variety announces that Pitt's company Plan B and Reliance Big Pictures have purchased the rights to the video game Dark Void from Capcom. They will be developing a feature film based on the game as a potential franchise and starring vehicle for Pitt. The game isn't even out - it'll hit shelves in January for all systems (Xbox, PS3, PC). “As a game, Dark Void was developed with a wide-screen mentality – a world full of adventure presented in cinematic scope and scale,” Capcom senior VP Germaine Gioia said of the game. Dark Void centers on a a cargo pilot named Will who, after crashing in the Bermuda Triangle, ends up in a parallel universe where a band of humans must fight an alien threat they had long been thought extinct. Will and the other humans are outmanned but have a number of weapons and powers to help them beat back the alien incursion. You can see a screenshot from the game above and it does look pretty damn cool. Pitt and Co. haven't gone so far as to setup distribution plans yet, so we're not sure how far out this is. They probably need to get a script written and director attached first before they put this into pre-production.
